Thee-Ah-Tah: 1776

john-schuck-smallBeing veddy, veddy civilized peeps, we spent last night at the thee-ah-tah, where we saw a performance of 1776 (there are nice photos from the production). The cast was outstanding, but I particularly enjoyed Conrad John Schuck’s portrayal of Benjamin Franklin. He is probably best known for his appeare in the movie M*A*S*H as Capt. Walter ‘Painless’ Waldowski, the “best equipped dentist in the army,” and Sgt. Charles Enright in the TV series McMillan and Wife.

Much of the theme (the debate over declaring independence from England) was quite timely.

If it comes to a thee-ah-tah near you, I recommend you see it.

  1. My husband would have loved that. He’s watched the movie approximately twice a month for the past few years. Unless, of course, I am wrong in figuring it’s like the movie, in which case he would still love it because he’s into those things.
I fail as a commenter today. *swoon of shame*

  5. I’ve seen it live at least 4 times, including once recently and once in Colonial Williamsburg, VA, which was so atmospheric I almost couldn’t stand it. I have the DVD with the “restored” scenes. It’s one of my all-time favorite musicals, you could say. I will see it if it comes anywhere near me. My only “regret” is that there are only 2 roles for women in the thing and both require singing voices far superior to mine.

  6. The first time I saw 1776 was when the wife and I were on our honeymoon in Maine in 1972. We happened to stop at Bowdoin College (Arctic exploration being of interest), saw a poster, and asked if there were any tickets available for that night’s performance. There were just two left! I can’t remember who was on the stage that night but the performances knocked my socks off.

Turns out the then Governor of Maine was present in the audience that night, too.
