Sex Offender Congressional Candidate.

Filed under: Uncategorized — Jim @ 5:12 pm

The State Attorney General’s Office ruled today that Daryl Brooks, a convicted sex offender, who is currently on probation after having served four years in prison for a sex offense, is eligible to run for a seat in New Jersey’s twelfth congressional district. This is so, even though under New Jersey law, as a probationer, Mr. Brooks cannot vote in New Jersey, and because he is not a registered voter, he would not be permitted to run for a state office.

By contrast, the U.S. Constitution provides that in order to run for congress, one must be 25 years old, a U.S. citizen for at least seven years and must live in the state from which he or she is elected. According to the State Attorney General’s Office, Mr. Brooks satisfies those criteria and, therefore, he can run for congress.

Mr. Brooks is running as the Green Party candidate.

Until today, I had thought that the Green Party nominated only environmentalists for public office. Then again, I suppose that being a tree-hugger and a kiddy flasher (or a congressman, for that matter) are not mutually exclusive.

  1. Regarding “Parkway Rest Stop” blog posted 10/24/04
In a search of my name on the AC Press web site to see if a recent letter to the editor has been posted(I won’t read or buy the damn paper anymore after my experiences with it during my 08 run for congress in 2nd district) I came across the name Michael Brooks for Senate 08. Is this the same guy who ran for Congress, I gather in 04, while he was on the sex offender list, and who served four years in prison?
Putting aside what might be his explanation for what is following him around now, and what he might have done, or not done, he’s got more cahones’ (sic), or even better, chutzpah, than even me, a janitor who also ran for a very conspicuous high elected office.
I will now research a little more about this man and see if it’s the same person; and who ever the real Michael Brooks is, I will see what his vote total was against Lautenberg and Zimmer. I might just gather 800 signatures and run for Governor of NJ in 09. This is one of the strengths of our democracy; if the people ever decide to shake the system up!

P.S. If I’m doing things in reverse order in checking him out, well that’s one of the pitfalls of the internet, isn’t it?

  2. “10/20/08 NJCom TRENTON — Daryl Brooks, city activist and independent U.S. Senate candidate, was jailed Monday for failure to pay more than $70,000 in child support payments to three women.
Brooks, who served a jail term for a sex offense in 1998, vowed to embark on a hunger strike to protest the treatment of those released from prison in America.”

Maybe I’m too careless to make a successful candidate. Daryl Brooks, not Michael; Daryl Mikell Brooks
I still say even after confirming he’s one in the same, that the more people running for office the better.
