Keeping an Eye on Irene.
Here at the Jersey Shore, peeps are keeping a close eye on Irene. We, in southern Ocean County, appear to be pretty much in the bullseye. I understand that on Long Beach Island (a few miles from here) there will be mandatory evacuations tomorrow. I’ll be moving all potential flying stuff from the yard into the garage and then making a major liquor store run in anticipation of drinking by candlelight on Sunday.
It promises to be an interesting weekend.
I figure it must be me. Moved to the Jersey Shore where traditionally there hasn’t been much snow, and last winter I was up to my ass in the stuff. Then comes the farookin’ house-shaking earthquake and now, a few days later, a no-bullshit hurricane. WTF?
We’ve been advised to expect to lose power and cable.
I’m buying an extra bottle or two of bourbon.
….. if you need to move south, you know where you and your missus will have a warm bed…..

Call me if you want some survival tips. Grills with propane are a good thing…

Grills with propane, drinking water for 3 days minimum, batteries for anything and cell phone charger that works with your car. Stack up on lots of that clear ice, but you may need to sacrifice it to save the contents of the fridge & freezer. With the saturated ground in Jersey, the big problem will be downed trees and no electricity when they take the lines with them. Stay safe.

Actually Jim, click through to the swilling coalition on your sidebar. They have probably the most complete yet succinct post I’ve ever seen on the subject.

I’ve lived through a few on the Texas gulf cost. Ditto post # 4, plus first aid supplies/prescription meds; cash (ATMs and credit card terminals don’t work without electricity; fill up vehicles and extra containers with gas (gas station pumps also don’t work without power); flashlights/lanterns (and batteries); and extra ammo.
In a pinch you can drain water from your hot water heater for drinking/cooking purposes.
Good luck.

Check your rain gutters! Be sure to have some rain gear, galoshes, and a shovel ready in case you get any weird yard flooding.

And you know we’ll be eating and drinking…

You are staying put??

Power will be the biggest problem since most people don’t know how to live without it. Seriously, stock up on food and water and beer. I hope you can handle warm beer. Have a plan to eat everything in your freezer. Looting could be a problem as well, so ensure you have enough bullets. People will take, by force, what they need in times like this. I would if I was hungry.
Stay safe, and do not underestimate what people will do, and never think it can’t happen.
Pay close attention to the water. The wind is bad, but the water is a game-changer.
