Funny that I found this site. I was a lifeguard at the Fort Holabird pool on the hill for two summers (1968 and 1969) and went there as a guest during other summers. It was a very relaxed base including the Induction Center on the other side of the fence. Soldiers that saw action in Vietnam were waiting their last days in the service there. Most didn’t give a dang about anything. At the pool, some smoked pot rolled into cigarettes and other drank beer from plastic soda cups. It was a continous party. I was lucky not to get fired. I remember the time I had three girls in the men’s dressing room and I stripped off my swim suit and got dressed in front of them. A young guest walked through at the time and complained to the base colonel. Somehow they never could show it was me.
The female guards needed to walk through the men’s locker room to leave at closing. Somehow I was always naked when they walked through. In any event, if a soldiers commanding officer called on the phone, we first asked the soldier if he was there. Most of the time they said “Hell no, I left two hours ago.”
We would watch softballs games after the pool closed. One day a Puerto Rican soldier and I booby trapped the pool. We had trash cans tied to door knobs, and mops full of Ajax the flew into the air when the door was opened. Best of all we had six racks of baskets balanced on edge to fall when the door was opened. The soldier and I were arrested by the MPs for being in the pool area after hours. We saw the MPs coming and ran outside and locked the gate. If the MPs had tripped the traps, we would certainly have been maimed for life or worse.
Fort Holabird taught me how to party. I have never used that job on my resume though.
