Jimmy Carter is the reason that John Kerry has to work so hard to shed the dovish image of the Democratic Party. His first act in office was to pardon the Vietnam draft dodgers. His response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was to boycott the Olympics. He stood by and let Tehran’s “students, the godfathers of the Islamists today, invade our embassy and take our employees hostage. Then, for fear of casualties, failure, or revealed incompetence, he took only the most limited action. Everybody remembers this, and his front-and-center presence at the DNC only reminded us.

I’m all for peace myself, but not running away when you’re called on when peace isn’t possible. They ought to include a french flag in the memorial too.
